Todo el mundo, incluso los que no tenemos un ordenador potentísimo, con cantidad de gigas de RAM, una Ge Force 9 y una CPU de última generación tipo Quad-core o i7 de Intel, hemos querido utilizar alguna vez el ordenador para jugar.
Es obvio, que no podremos jugar a los últimos títulos o a titulos que requieran DirectX 10, pero en la mayoría de los casos los juegos un poco menos modernos nos pueden servir para pasar el rato.
Bueno, pues incluso con una máquina modesta y una gráfica no muy potente (como una GeForce 4 MX o una Ati 9200 o una Intel 9xx) podemos jugar a una cantidad de juegos considerable. En este caso, me centraré en comentar algunos juegos que según intel, se pueden jugar en sus gráficas con chipsets GMA 9xx y GMA 95x
En mi caso tengo actualmente 2 ordenadores con Intel GMA 9xx y uno con GMA 950 (este). Y los he utilizado durante tiempo para jugar con juegos como el Diablo II y su expansión, el Halo, el Age of empires II, o el Empire earth (I y II) Obviamente a los titulos 3d pues les he tenido que bajar bastante la calidad, pero el rendimiento ha resultado siempre aceptable, no interfiriendo en absoluto en la jugabilidad (por ejemplo el Halo con todo a minimo, resolución 640×480 y profundidad de color de 32 bits se ejecutaba con medias de 25fps, bajando de esta media en entornos muy ‘hostiles’ con muchos npc (non player characters) en los que los disparos y las explosiones exigían más a la gráfica de lo que podía dar.
De todas formas lo que hay que tener en cuenta a la hora de jugar con una gráfica que no sea de última generación son 3 o 4 características que nos dirán si es viable jugar a cierto juego o no.
Características del chip gráfico y la tarjeta gráfica.
- Aceleración 3d: Si nuestra gráfica no dispone solo podremos jugar a juegos 2d (DirectX 6 aprox.). Actualmente todas tienen aceleración 3d, con una GPU (Graphics Processor Unit) dedicada exclusivamente a esto.
- Memoria de video: Puede ser dedicada o compartida. Cuanta más dedicada y menos compartida mejor (ya que la compartida se le ‘resta’ a la RAM del PC.) además la dedicada suele ser mucho más rápida (DDR3 actualmente)
- Pixel Shader – Define la cantidad de pixels que se pueden mostrar por segundo (y por tanto la resolución máxima para un cierto framerate). una resolución de 640×480 a 30fps teoricamente exige un pixel shader de 9’2 millones de pixels por segundo.
- Vertex Shader – Define la cantidad de vertices que se pueden mostrar por segundo (en un determinado instante, cuantos ‘cambios bruscos de color’, por ejemplo en explosiones, o cuando vemos el agua, pues es más realista cuanto más vertx shader.
- Iluminación por hardware – Especifica si la tarjeta gráfica es capaz de generar efectos avanzados de iluminación por hardware (reflejos, brillos, explosiones realistes, …)
Las características de los chipsets gráficos GMA 9xx y las GMA 95x son:
- Aceleración 3d: Si (GPU – 266 mhz gma 9xx y 400 mhz gma 95x)
- Memoria de video: 8+120 MB para GMA 9xx y 16+224 MB para GMA 95x (dedicada + compartida opcionalmente)
- Pixel Shader: 2.0 (1.6 GPixels/sec)
- Vertex Shader: 3.0 (It features a Software Vertex Shader) (1.6 GTexels/sec fill rate)
- Iluminación por hardware: No
Por tanto para la mayoría de juegos que requieran DirectX 9 si no ponemos la calidad al máximo deberíamos obtener un framerate (Frames por segundo – FPS) aceptable. La lista de juegos jugables con GMA 9xx que da Intel es la descrita a continuación, pero hay que tener en cuenta que la mayoría de soluciones exigen tener ’3D Analyze’ que es una potente aplicación que permite ejecutar multiples juegos que requieren gráficas muy potentes en máquinas que teoricamente no deberían poder moverlos (a costa de bajar el rendimiento)
